What is CBD Crude Oil?
CBD crude oil is a form of minimally-processed hemp extract. It's as close as you'll find to the original plant makeup as it is found in nature. "Crude" refers to the quality of the oil produced in the first extraction of industrial hemp material. The initial extract is "crude" because it is completely unfiltered and unrefined; it is the first step in the CBD manufacturing process. From this point on, the oil will be subjected to a series of filtering and purifying processes.
Characteristics of CBD Crude Oil
In addition to CBD (cannabidiol), which typically has a potency range between 45 - 55% on average, crude oil contains the full spectrum of 100+ phytocannabinoids such as:
- Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)
- Cannabichromene (CBC)
- Cannabigerol (CBG)
- Cannabigerolic Acid (CBGA)
- Cannabicyclol (CBL)
- Tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV)
- Cannabidiolic Acid (CBDA)
- Cannabidivarin (CBDV)
- Cannabidivarinic Acid (CBDVA)
- Cannabinol (CBN)
- Tetrahydrocannabinolic Acid (THCA)
- Tetrahydrocannabivarin Acid (THCVA)
At this stage, crude oil is not THC-free. While it’s likely a negligible amount, the THC-removal process is still an important part of the wholesale CBD manufacturing process. Crude oil also contains other natural, non-cannabinoid compounds from the hemp plant like:
- Waxy substances
And other miscellaneous plant material that is destined to be filtered out and discarded during the manufacturing process.
Visually, crude oil is much darker in color than more refined hemp oils and tends to be more aromatic as well. Further refinement would yield a lighter, near flavorless and odorless extract. To achieve a more potent and refined CBD oil (such as a 99% pure CBD isolate powder), further washing, extraction, and distillation are required. Customers are increasingly turning to wholesale CBD crude oil because it can be refined into a specific, desirable form. It's a matter of versatility — crude oil allows companies to customize the cannabinoid potency and selection in their unique final product formulations.
As the CBD hemp industry grows, we're seeing that bulk CBD crude oil is becoming a favorable option for companies interested in slight cost savings while sourcing materials to develop their hemp products made to spec.
How is Crude CBD Oil Manufactured?
Producing CBD crude oil may be one of the most straightforward steps in all of CBD manufacturing. The first step in the extraction process is to cultivate and harvest hemp plants that are naturally abundant in CBD. Once the plants have been cultivated, a solvent is forced through the hemp biomass to "pull out" the desired materials such as CBD, essential oils, and other beneficial plant compounds.
The most basic way to extract CBD crude oil is by using alcohol as the solvent. Hexane, butane, and propyl alcohol are among the simplest options. Hemp Corp has a range of extraction possibilities at our disposal, depending on client preference. In most cases, we recommend a supercritical CO2 extraction method that uses carbon dioxide as the primary solvent. In modern CBD manufacturing, CO2 is popular because it is gentler on the fragile oils, and there is less of a risk of damaging the product during extraction.
Once the residual solvents have been removed from the solution, you're left with rich hemp oil that contains an assortment of beneficial cannabinoids, terpenes, and phytochemicals.
What's the Difference Between CBD Distillate and CBD Crude Oil?
A typical CBD crude oil contains approximately 45 - 55% CBD content by weight. To increase CBD potency to 70%, 80%, or higher, the oil must be put purified and distilled. Distilling crude oil will yield a full-spectrum CBD distillate. This means that the oil still contains all of the same natural compounds found in the hemp plant and in crude oil, but the distillate will have a higher CBD concentration, hovering around 80% on average. The cannabinoid concentrations, selection, and THC contents can all be altered during the distillation process, allowing both broad spectrum and full spectrum CBD distillates to be produced. Unlike crude oil, CBD distillate has a much lighter appearance, nearly golden in color, and because the CBD content is much higher, less hemp CBD oil is needed per dose to achieve the desired effect or health benefit.
How to use full-spectrum CBD crude oil
If you're wondering, "what can you do with CBD crude oil?" you'll be pleased to know you can basically do anything you'd like. Remember, crude oil is the raw material that manufacturers process, refine, and filter to create more concentrated CBD extracts. CBD crude oil is the equivalent to a mound of clay in the hands of a skillful artist — the only limit is his imagination and the effort he's willing to put in.
Crude oil is the basis for any CBD product you'd find on store shelves. Whether you're interested in CBD gummies, capsules, tinctures, vape oils, you name it. The CBD in each of these products began as CBD crude oil. But before it can be used, the oil must be activated (via the process of decarboxylation). To keep it simple, decarboxylation is the process of heating the oil at a precise temperature to alter the desired cannabinoids' chemical structure, rendering them more bioavailable to the human body.
Once activated, CBD crude oil can be consumed as is, or infused into any everyday CBD products you may be familiar with: tinctures, gummies, topical creams and lotions, edibles, foods, among many other variations. CBD crude's main appeal is that you're getting the whole hemp plant in an extracted oil form. All of the natural compounds come together to provide a holistic synergistic benefit, coined the "entourage effect."
On the other hand, CBD isolates and distillates are more suitable options for product formulators looking to deliver specific, highly potent CBD doses in their products. For example, tinctures, vapes, and gummies are among the most popular CBD products, and consumers often expect to see the exact amount of CBD disclosed on the packaging.
